About Alfred Wallis
About Alfred Wallis
Born in Devon in 1855, Alfred Wallis was a Fisherman, merchant and later odd job man who lived in St Ives, Cornwall. Following the death of his wife in 1922, he began painting as a hobby, at the age of 70, later saying it was “for company”. Entirely self-taught, Wallis never took an art lesson in his life, but had a distinctive style that has been much admired since.
His work was discovered by chance by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who visited St Ives in 1928 to set up an Artists’ colony. They were enamoured with Wallis’ work and through them he found himself pushed into circles of some of the most progressive artists in Britain. Wallis was unfazed by this contact, and continued to paint as he always had.
His work is considered to be an excellent example of the naïve style, and was painted onto the materials that Wallis had to hand, scraps of paper or card, and using cheaply available household paints. Painting almost all of his works from memory, he eschewed normal perspective, and often based the scale of objects on their relative importance within the scene.
Despite the popular attention, Wallis sold few paintings in his lifetime, and eventually died in poverty in the Madron Workhouse near Penzance in 1941. His work remains, and thanks to his friendship with Jim Ede, a large portion of it can be found in Kettle’s Yard.
