William Blake, 'Enitharmon Slept,' from Europe A Prophecy

Blake's allegorical poem, Europe a Prophecy depicts a mythic struggle between reason and imagination, and through it, explores themes of political and spiritual revolution. Enitharmon is a reoccurring goddess-like figure in Blake's mythological Pantheon, representing spiritual beauty and poetic inspiration, together with Los, her husband, and the embodiment of creativity, she has a number of children, including Orc, the embodiment of revolution.
The title image refers to Enitharmon sleeping for 1800 years: the period between the birth of Christ, and the French Revolution, of which Blake was initially very supportive, seeing it as a chance for greater equality and freedom.
