The Macclesfield Psalter, a medieval prayer book, is one of the true treasures of The Fitzwilliam Museum. Its illuminations are unusually lavish and elaborate, with particularly interesting marginalia displaying macabre creatures, bawdy behaviour, and animals engaged in human activities - all in contrast to the solemn and sacred texts they accompany. This unusual advent calendar picks out some of the most amusing and grotesque of these creations, with each window that is opened revealing still more intriguing details. A fantastic alternative to more traditional advent designs, and sure to elicit smiles from children and adults alike.
