Samuel Palmer (1805-1881), The Magic Apple Tree, c.1830
The Magic Apple Tree is one of the most enduringly popular images in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum. The vivid colours and varied evocation of the textures of the natural world lend themselves fabulously to the jigsaw format. Palmer was one of the leading figures of British Romanticism and this work belongs to his 'visionary' period, in which he used watercolours (here with pen and Indian ink) to create landscapes rich in spirituality and wonder.
