John James Audubon, Ruddy Ducks, c.1827-38
Naturalist and skilled artist John James Audubon set out to catalogue and illustrate every species of bird in North America for his ornithological masterpiece Birds of America. He comments on the diverse plumage of the ruddy duck, with differences between male and female, young and old. In this plate, he captures these variations as the ducks are depicted in their watery habitat.
