Samuel Palmer, The Magic Apple Tree, 1830 (detail)
Samuel Palmer was a central figure of British Romanticism. This work belongs to his 'visionary' period, in which he used watercolours, here with pen and indian ink, to create landscapes rich in spirituality and wonder. The glowing colours and sympathetically portrayed shepherd with his flock help this painting maintain its place as one of the most beloved in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum.
