Darwin's Origins - Bone china mug (large)
Darwin's Origins - Bone china mug (large)
Part of the Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle collection. Created by Wedgwood and inspired by the historic journey of Charles Darwin, this collection draws on archive materials from Cambridge University Library.
When Charles Darwin, grandson of Josiah Wedgwood, was presented with the opportunity to join the crew of the HMS Beagle, he was initially dissuaded by his father Robert. it was Josiah Wedgwood II, Charles' uncle, who wrote to Robert urging him to encourage and sponsor Charles on this trip.
Working closely with Cambridge University Library, the original drawings from Darwin's trip (created by the Beagle's artist Conrad Martens and by Darwin himself) have been carefully styled by Wedgwood and expertly crafted in Stoke-on-Trent.
