    Hokusai was a renowned Japanese master artist and printmaker of the ukiyo-e genre (pictures of the floating world). He spent most of his life in Edo (now Tokyo) and took his inspiration from scenes of urban life around him, stories from mythology and religion, and from the splendour of the natural world.
