Isaac Newton by Quentin Blake - Fine bone china mug
Isaac Newton by Quentin Blake, detail from Cambridge 800: Informal Panorama
Cambridge University celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2009. To mark the occasion, beloved British illustrator Quentin Blake was asked to produce a frieze to commemorate some of the university's most notable alumni.
Newton studied at Trinity College, where he was later made a fellow. His discoveries in physics, mathematics, and optics make him one of the most important scientists of all time. On this bone china mug, Newton is depicted at the famous moment of pondering a falling apple, an event which is said to have inspired his theory of gravitational force.
