This portrait by British artist Joy Labinjo depicts the writer Phillis Wheatley (c.1753-1784). Wheatley book Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral was published in 1773 and is considered the first published collection of poetry by an African-American author. On the reverse of this bookmark are lines from Wheatley's poem about Harvard, 'To the University of Cambridge in New England,' which was composed when she was just 14.
This and other works by Labinjo were shown in the Rise Up exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in spring 2025.
