Fritware tile with a tulip design in Iznik style, c.1550-1599
The city of Iznik in Anatolia became famous between the 15th and 17th centuries for producing boldly decorative, colourful ceramics with designs inspired by the flora (and sometimes fauna) of the natural world. The style and colour palette, typically featuring blues, greens, and reds against a white background, was highly influential elsewhere in Turkey and beyond. This tulip tile is a fine example from the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum.
