Utagawa Hiroshige, Fukagawa Susaki and Jûmantsubo, No. 107 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 1856

The Fitzwilliam Museum has a wonderful and diverse collection of Japanese prints, including Utagawa Hiroshige's impressive One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The series is made up of colour prints from woodblocks in the ukiyo-e or 'floating world' genre. This dramatic illustration demonstrates the sublime power of nature as a mighty bird of prey soars above the miniaturised landscape beneath.
