Illustration of a giant skate chasing a man, from the Macclesfield Psalter, c. 1330

The marginalia of the Macclesfield Psalter provides a cavalcade of unusual creatures and grotesqueries. The tiny illuminated prayer book, produced in East Anglia in the early 12th century, is one of the rarest and most precious treasures in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum.
