Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), Fuji from Koshigaya, Musashi, 1858
Thirty-six Views of Fuji

From the Japanese woodcut print collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
Hiroshige lived and worked during a tumultuous time in Japanese history, as the previously isolated country began to build closer ties with the rest of the globe. He became one of the most talented, prolific and popular Japanese artists of the 19th century, admired for his striking use of colour and form as he captured scenes of Japanese life, both urban and rural, and the natural world.
