William De Morgan & Co., Tile with Five Ruby Birds, 1888

William De Morgan (1839 - 1917) was the most prominent ceramicist of the Arts and Crafts Movement. His bold designs and experimental techniques not only influenced his contemporaries in Victorian Britain, but have continued to provide inspiration to many subsequent generations of ceramicists. This tile was produced at the Sands End Pottery workshop in Fulham, based upon a design thatDde Morgan devised in the 1870s.
