Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger, Tulip, c. 1640 (detail) Like many Dutch artists of his day, Ambrosius Bosschaert the Younger (1609 - 1645) specialised in flower paintings. In around 1640 he produced a book illustrating a variety of the species of tulip that were so central to Dutch commerce and art. This specimen, the striped 'Olinda' tulip, was highly sought after and one 'Olinda' bulb could be expected to fetch the equivalent of many hundreds of pounds.
