Canon G. Frederick Weston, Front of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel, c. 1845.
The enormous rock temples at Abu Simbel in southern Egypt were constructed in the 13th century BC, during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II. Weston's watercolour depicts the partially excavated remains of the larger of the two temples, showing portions of the towering 20m high statues of Ramesses II that flanked the entrance on each side.
In the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
