William De Morgan & Co, Peacock tiles, c. 1888-97

A boldly coloured silk tie using the central motif from De Morgan's peacock design, originally produced on slip-coated earthenware. De Morgan was one of the most prominent figures of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and is known for his innovative handpainted ceramic tiles, which took inspiration from the bright colours of Middle Eastern ceramics as well as from the natural world.
