The Fitzwilliam Museum has an impressive and diverse array of European samplers, pieces of embroidery which enabled the seamstress to become adept at different stitches and to experiment with patterns, colours, and lettering. This splendid cotton tea towel incorporates floral patterns and motifs from a bright band sampler inscribed 'Dorcas Haynes' and dated 1720. The original work uses a wide range of coloured silks and displays mastery of stitching techniques including herringbone, rococo, and Florentine.
