Jan van Meyer, The Daughters of Sir Matthew Decker, 1718
A playful and timely reinvention of this family portrait, with some interesting connections to the history of the Fitzwilliam collection. Matthew Decker was a wealthy merchant who accumulated a large collection of art from around the world. This collection was eventually inherited by his grandson Richard FitzWilliam, 7th Viscount FitzWilliam and son of one of the four daughters depicted here. Richard FitzWilliam's bequest lead to the foundation of the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1816.
