Kitagawa Utamaro, woodblock prints from A Multitude of Birds (Momo chidori), c. 1790
Japanese artist Utamaro is one of the undisputed masters of ukiyo-e coloured woodblock prints, achieving great reknown in his home country and beyond. Whilst particularly famed for his depictions of beautiful women, he also turned his attention to the beauty of the world of animals and nature. His book A Multitude of Birds was a playful contribution to ornithology, offering couplets of comic verse accompanied by stunning illustrations of some familiar feathery friends.
