Joris van Son, Still life with Lobster, c.1660 (detail)
Flemish artist Joris van Son specialised in opulent still life paintings in oils. The detail selected for this melamine chopping board, taken from a larger banqueting scene, enables van Son to show off his mastery in depicting different textures: the dimpled peel and luscious flesh of the citrus fruit are offset against the gleaming surface of the metal chalice.
A serving tray featuring the full image Still Life with a Lobster is also available.
Held in collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, bequeathed in 1912 by Charles Brinsley Marlay.
