Claude Monet, Les Peupliers, 1891
The Fitzwilliam Museum has one of the finest collections of Impressionist art in the UK and Poplars ranks among the museum's most popular paintings. During the summer of 1891, Monet spent much of his time outside painting the distinctive poplar trees lining the banks of the river Epte near his home in Giverny, ultimately producing thirty two works on unusual square shaped canvases. The elegant curved pattern of the poplar trees provides the motif for this hand-finished tie, made with the finest silk from China.
