Brueghel the Younger was based in the Southern Netherlands and came from a family of artists. He specialised in depicting scenes from the lives of ordinary people, as in this painting of saints day celebrations from the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum. Each examination of the busy scene invites the viewer to discover a new detail, just as in life itself: villagers dancing, cooking, and making merry... with perhaps a little bit of overindulgence along the way. Characters and motifs from the painting are picked out for the design of this pair of seamless socks.
