Nativity, the Virgin Reading, from the Besancon Book of Hours, 15th century
One of our most popular Christmas cards, featuring a unusual and touching representation of the Virgin Mary: she is pictured reading while Joseph takes his turn to tend to the baby Jesus. The image is taken from the Besancon Book of Hours, a French 15th century illuminated manuscript in the collection of The Fitzwilliam Museum.
