Belgian painter Stevens was known for his depictions of beautifully attired women in domestic settings. The subject of the reading woman was popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th Centuries, and this example by Stevens is both lush and intimate. The painting is given a playful and creative twist with the addition of a matching face mask.
