As one of only six copyright deposit libraries in the UK, the Cambridge University Library is well established as a vital resource for the thousands of students and researchers working in the city. It is less well known that, in addition to being a repository for knowledge and learning, the Library also has an important collection of rare books and journals.
At Curating Cambridge we have selected some of the most unusual items from the Special Collections to showcase images rarely seen by the public and to produce beautiful and unique products with fascinating stories behind them. Our Darwin’s Children range, for example, makes use of a set of charming doodles by the sons and daughters of Charles Darwin. The drawings are all the more remarkable for being found on the reverse pages of notes by Darwin himself, including an early draft of his ground-breaking book On the Origin of Species.
